The Central Perth Fire Brigade was originally housed in the Perth Town Hall and run mostly by volunteers. 

The gold rush saw Perth transformed into a bustling town, and in 1899 the newly established WA Fire Brigade Board laid the foundations for the modern, professional fire and rescue service we know today.

Its first headquarters were on Murray and Irwin Streets, a two-storey building, designed by architect Michael Cavanagh and made from Cottesloe limestone. The building was used as Perth’s Fire Station until 1979. 

After it was decommissioned, the station was refurbished and converted into an education centre and museum which is well worth exploring as part of The Lotterywest Boorloo Heritage Festival.

Perth Mint

WA’s early gold rush brought unprecedented prosperity to our State and transformed Perth into a bustling city.

This heritage listed building, completed in 1899, is home to Australia’s largest precious metals enterprise and is one of our State’s biggest exporters. Last year alone, the Mint crafted more than 19 million coins and other minted products from gold, silver, and platinum. 

To celebrate their 125th birthday the Perth Mint is hosting a free self-guided Gold Nugget Hunt on both 6 & 7 April. Bookings are required so secure your spot now. 

Celebrating 120 years

His Majesty’s Theatre

Considered the grandest Federation Free Classical theatre building in Australia, His Majesty’s is marking its 120th year of bringing live theatre, ballet and international and local performers to Western Australians. 

From 21-28 April, His Majesty’s Theatre will host a free immersive light experience and display 'His Maj in The Limelight' featuring the photographs and films capturing this building’s incredible history. There will be daily musical performances, guided walks, street window displays and roving entertainers. Find out more about the event here.

Celebrating 100 years

Country Women's Association (CWA) WA

Founded in 1924, the CWA WA have given much needed support to rural families in Western Australia and have been instrumental in promoting women’s unity and community cohesion over its long and proud history.

In 1936 the CWA first published the CWA Cookery Book and Household Hints, now in its 58th edition. The cook book has been passed down within families and its recipes have been the ‘glue’ of social interaction in rural and regional communities across WA.

Initially headquartered in various locations across the city, the CWA WA moved to its current premises on Hay Street in 1968.

To celebrate the big 100 get along to the celebrations happening on Sunday 21 April for craft and cooking demonstrations, and, of course, piping hot tea and homemade scones. More info can be found here. 

Celebrating 30 years

Perth City Farm

An urban permaculture space in the heart of East Perth, this farm has transformed a once contaminated industrial site into an oasis of sustainability.

In 1994, the East Perth Redevelopment Authority gave the farm’s founders the opportunity to repurpose the site and make it into a place promoting environmental sustainability with arts, culture, and community engagement.

Since then, Perth City Farm has made some incredible achievements, including gaining organic certification and launching the Saturday Farmer’s Market — the first WA market to provide only certified organic and biodynamic produce.
